Cautionary Notes on Asian Economic Integration

Introduction Economic integration and cooperation in Asia has traditionally been more market-driven and institution-lite. The Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) in 1997/98 and the Great Recession in 2008 changed that. As the number of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in Asia increases, intraregional trade has intensified and it continues to grow. In the financial side, the cross-border holding of financial assets is still low but began to expand especially since 2008. In this short manuscript I will first evaluate Asia’s integration in trade and financial sector before looking at the progress of regional cooperation. I will then provide my critical assessment on the concept of regional integration and cooperation.
